A website-style Bluesky handle is a custom domain handle, rather than a conventional name followed by the default service domain. It can help connect an account with a website. It does not by itself certify the real-world person in a dating chat, the truth of a biography or their relationship status. Compare the exact domain with the website the person actually claimed.

Understand the association being expressed
Bluesky documents default service-domain handles and custom domain handles. Its explanation of domain names describes them as a way to connect an account with an associated website. The relevant question is therefore which domain is associated with the profile, rather than whether a familiar name appears somewhere in the address. This guide does not assess a particular account's technical setup or independent identity. [Bluesky: Domain names as handles] [Bluesky Support: User handle format]
Compare the whole domain, not the familiar word
Read the complete handle and the complete website address the person supplied. Similar spelling, an extra word or a different ending may indicate a different domain. A recognisable first name inside an unfamiliar address is not a connection to a known organization. Avoid logging into a website reached from an unexpected profile link. If you cannot confidently distinguish the addresses, ask the person to explain the connection instead of treating the resemblance as verification.
Keep three different claims on separate lines
A custom handle can reduce one kind of ambiguity while leaving other questions unanswered. DateClues recommends this worksheet when a match presents a website-style handle as proof.
| Claim | Relevant public clue | Remaining question |
|---|---|---|
| This profile is associated with this domain | The exact full handle | Is that the domain the person claimed? |
| The person in my chat controls the profile | A directly shared public link | Has that connection been established? |
| The biography is accurate | Specific independently supported details | Which claims are still only self-description? |
Do not turn website research into personal tracing
You can ask why a domain appears in a shared profile without seeking registrant contact details or attempting to connect unrelated identities. Keep the task limited to the public connection the person offered. If a domain or page is unavailable, mark it unresolved; an unavailable website does not establish fraud or a hidden relationship. Do not contact people mentioned on the website to investigate your match.
Choose the next check based on your actual input
If the unresolved input is a username, continue with a public-username comparison. If it is a photo, use an image-context workflow instead of assuming the domain proves who is pictured. DateClues promotes TraceSeek, our same-operator app, for public username and image clues; this is not a promise of complete Bluesky coverage, domain ownership investigation or personal authentication. Stop once the specific website-association question is answered or cannot be answered from appropriate public information.
A couple more questions
Does every Bluesky handle end with the default service domain?
No. Bluesky also supports custom domain handles. Read the whole handle rather than matching only a familiar name.
Does a website-style handle prove that a dating match is trustworthy?
No. A website association is narrower than a claim about the person, their biography or their intentions.
