Before sending your own photo, review its information in Photos and decide whether its location should travel with it. Apple provides controls to remove a photo’s location or exclude Location through the share sheet. These are different from cropping visible landmarks and from changing Camera permissions for future photos.

Start with the file you actually intend to send
Apple explains that photos can contain embedded location coordinates and that recipients may be able to access this information. On your own iPhone, open the intended photo and swipe up or tap Info. Review that image rather than assuming a screenshot, an edited version and the original carry identical information. Do not use this workflow to extract another person’s whereabouts. Choose between changing the photo and changing this share
For a photo’s location entry, Apple’s current guide describes the More menu, Adjust Info, Adjust Location and No Location. For a share from Photos, use the share sheet’s Options and turn off Location. Menu wording can vary with software version; follow Apple’s linked instructions if your screen differs. Review the selection before completing the share. [Apple: Manage location metadata in Photos]
Keep three privacy decisions separate
The following is DateClues’ pre-send worksheet. Work from the row that matches what you want to change. Removing one kind of clue does not promise that a photo becomes anonymous.
| Concern | Control to review | Separate check |
|---|---|---|
| Location attached to an existing photo | That photo’s location information | Review the version you will send |
| Location included in one share | Location in share Options | Confirm the current share selection |
| Future Camera location collection | Camera access in Location Services | Existing photos need their own review |
| A house number visible in the picture | Crop, retake or choose another image | Metadata controls do not hide the background |
Future collection needs a separate setting
Apple’s guide directs users who want to stop Camera location collection to Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Camera and Never. This is a choice about future collection, not a way to recall images already delivered. If you only want to exclude location from a particular share, choose that narrower control instead. Finish the check without expanding the disclosure
Our suggested final pass is to check the photo, the audience and the visible background together. If you cannot establish which version is being sent, choose another image or wait. Do not forward a private picture to a search app to test its privacy. TraceSeek public-profile searches do not remove metadata or recall copies another person already received.
A couple more questions
Does cropping a photo remove its location metadata?
Do not assume it does. Review the actual photo information and sharing options; cropping addresses visible content.
Will changing Camera location permission remove coordinates from old photos?
Treat existing photos separately. Apple provides per-photo location controls as well as the Camera permission setting for collection.
