THE SHORT ANSWER

A Mastodon move notice can explain why an older profile points to a different account. Read the notice, compare the stated destination with the link the person shared and keep the observation dated. A move, a redirect and a page with little post history are not by themselves evidence of impersonation, deception or infidelity.

Read what Mastodon's move tools actually do

Mastodon's documentation distinguishes a profile redirect from an account move. A redirect displays a moved-profile notice. A move additionally transfers followers where supported, while posts do not move with the account. This makes an old profile, a new destination and different visible histories compatible with a migration. The documentation does not authenticate the person in your dating conversation. Preserve the old and new links as different observations

DateClues recommends keeping a small continuity record: the old public link you received, the destination named in the visible notice, the new link shared directly by the person and when you looked. Compare full addresses rather than just matching avatars. If the old notice and the person's current link disagree, ask which destination they meant. Do not treat your first search result as an authoritative account history.

Use a migration worksheet

The output should describe the public account transition, not offer a conclusion about a relationship. These branches help you avoid filling gaps with assumptions.

Keep migration separate from a relationship agreement

Someone may use different social services or accounts for reasons they have not discussed with you. A migration clue does not tell you whether they are exclusively dating, hiding conversations or meeting other people. If those are your concerns, name the agreement and ask about it directly. Avoid following an extended trail of followers, asking server administrators for private records or using an alternate account to get around a block.

Know what a public-profile app would still leave unresolved

A search tool may return candidate public links; it cannot substitute for the migration context on the source page. DateClues promotes TraceSeek, from the same operator, for public username and image clues, without promising exhaustive Mastodon coverage or private account history. If you already have the old and new links, the comparison may be sufficient without another search. Finish with the narrowest supported note and keep uncertainty visible.

A couple more questions

Does an account move necessarily carry the old posts to the new account?

Mastodon's documentation says posts do not move with the account. A sparse destination history is not sufficient evidence of deception.

Can a move notice verify the person who is chatting with me?

No. It is public account-context information. Connecting a person in a separate conversation remains a different question.
