Read the typed custom status as the person's own chosen message, and read the activity display as a separate signal about an app or game. Discord lets users enter custom text or emoji and choose how long it lasts, with a one-day default expiration. Custom text can replace the activity line in member and friend lists while the activity may still appear on the full profile. So if a screenshot shows only custom text, treat it as a chosen message with an expiry, not a record of what the person was doing or where they were.

Separate the two display surfaces
Start by naming what you are actually looking at. A custom status is text or emoji the person typed and can include a chosen lifetime. An activity display reports an app or game surface tied to the account. Discord states that custom statuses can override the activity display in member and friend lists, while activities can still appear on the full profile. That means one screenshot may show only the custom line and hide the activity entirely, so absence of an activity in that view proves nothing about whether one exists. [Discord: custom status and activity display]
- Label each visible line as custom text, activity, or unclear.
- If only custom text is visible, note that the activity surface is not shown in this view.
| observation | limit | next step |
|---|---|---|
| Typed sentence or emoji in a status area | It is chosen text, not a measured event | Read it as a message the person wrote |
| An app or game line under the name | Shows an activity surface, not location or intent | Do not convert it into a claim about where the person is |
| Only custom text in a list view | Activity may still exist on the full profile | Record that this view does not show activity |
Check the configured expiry before dating the artifact
Custom statuses are not permanent by default. A person enters the text and chooses how long it lasts, and the default expiration is one day. When you examine a screenshot, look for any expiry note in the capture rather than assuming the message was set at the moment of the screenshot or that it remains current. If no expiry is visible, the honest reading is that the lifetime is unknown, not that the status is ongoing. [Discord: custom status and activity display]
- Note whether an expiry or duration appears in the image.
- If none appears, write 'expiry not shown' rather than guessing a lifetime.
Build a small artifact hierarchy
When several surfaces appear, order them by what they can support. The typed status is the most direct evidence of what the person chose to say. An activity line is a separate surface that can be hidden by the custom status in list views. Account-level identity fields, such as the username, are separate again. This hierarchy stops a typed line from being promoted into a factual record of behavior.
- List the surfaces visible in the artifact.
- Rank them by directness to the person's own words.
- Mark every surface that is hidden or absent in this view.
Keep observations, limits, and decisions apart
Write three short blocks. In observations, describe only what is visible. In limits, state what the view cannot show, such as a hidden activity surface or an unshown expiry. In decisions, describe the practical step you will take, such as asking the person directly if the detail matters. This separation keeps a hypothetical example clear: if a screenshot shows the text 'working late,' the safe reading is that this is a typed status with an unknown expiry, not evidence of a work schedule or a physical location.
Stop when the source is insufficient
If the screenshot is cropped, the source cannot be authenticated, or the status and activity lines cannot be told apart, record that exact limit and stop. Do not seek private account access or try to identify someone from partial clues. A public username or image can lead to public-profile clues, but a match does not confirm identity, ownership, or current activity. If the question depends on facts the artifact does not contain, the correct next step is a direct question to the person or no conclusion at all.
A couple more questions
Does a custom status show what someone is doing?
No. It is text or emoji the person typed, and Discord can let it override the activity line in list views. Read it as a chosen message, not a live record of activity.
How long does a Discord custom status last?
The person chooses the duration when setting it, and the default expiration is one day. If a screenshot does not show an expiry, treat the lifetime as unknown rather than assuming it is current.
An activity line is missing from the screenshot. Does that mean there is no activity?
Not necessarily. Custom status can override the activity display in member and friend lists, while the activity may still appear on the full profile. A list view without an activity line is not proof that no activity exists.
